I studied art and theatre at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After that, I concentrated on botany (my other love) culminating with a Ph.D. in forest ecology from Colorado State University. It opened the world to me.
Most scientists end up focusing on one process, species, or system. Me, I went to Africa with the South Turkana Ecosystem Project, then designed habitat restoration projects for oil fields in arctic Alaska, a bit of time in Central America and Mongolia, then ended up with subsistence agroforesty projects in tropical Africa and Pakistan. My stomach was always six time zones behind
the rest of me. Still, it left me with memories spanning the world’s ecosystems and cultures.
I stay closer to home now, working on art, writing, and designing. I don’t know, still unfocused, never bored.
I make my home in Salem, Oregon with my wife, Susan, our five cats, and a fine young dog.
Cheers!
