Sherman’s April 2004 Column

Some time back I was monitoring solar radiation in the conference room window – a duty I take serious like on sunny winter days. I musta let been pretty involved in my work cause I found myself in one of those darn management meetings.  You can imagin’ how surprised I was, ol’ Sherm does his best to avoid meetings of the management variety, unless refreshments are bein’ offered. But hey, they slipped in on me.

Since I was stuck, I was hoping that somebody would have extra paper and a pencil, so that I could participate professional like. I felt my eyes dilate when they rolled out them blueprints. “This is great,” I thought to myself as I jumped right in to give ‘em a close look.

Everybody musta appreciated my innerest, cause they all exclaimed, “Oh Sherman!” real enthusiastic like and someone swept me up in their arms so I could get a real good overview of them plans.  “What a great bunch of people I works with,” that’s what I thought.

You know it was perfect that I happened to be in on that particular planning session. They are getting’ ready for some pretty important changes around here an they needed my help. Get this, we are goin’ to build three cat colony rooms right here at the shelter.

These colony rooms are gonna be great because when cats come in as families, a mom an her kittens, they can stay together as families.  Other cats, after they’ve been tested for sickness, provided they are healthy like, can share a room and be buds. You know, playin’ together and swappin’ stories, piling all up in a heap to take their naps and such like.

Anyways, the plan is to help people see how cats can be friends, happy and content. I hope that some of them people decide to take one or two of them happy cats home – we can sorta spread the joy that way.  You know, some of the cats livin’ here go for a month or more before getting adopted.  Them little cages are enough to make the happiest cat more than a little sad, I am one cat who can say so from experience.

It will be a great day when them cat colony rooms is finished.  I sure hope that we get plenty of good help to make them.  Some guys already started demolition getting ready for the new construction.  Anybody know where I can get myself a kitty crowbar?  I plan to help.

Sherman is the official office cat of the HSWV.   A former stray and tough guy, Sherman now uses his street smarts to monitor solar radiation at key windows, patrol the break room, and identify “cat unfriendly” dogs.  Sherman made his writing debut in Spring 2003.
